a little doo dad to separate my opening blurb from the rest of the post

When we moved to our new house 18 months ago it was like a dream. I was 8 months pregnant and told by doctors to stay off my feet. I sat by the kitchen window looking out over our new lake while The Hubs did all the unloading and most of the unpacking.

As relaxing as that was, I couldn’t wait until after the babe was born so that I could get into that big beautiful kitchen and cook (and rearrange everything in the cupboards).

But once I got into the kitchen I was disappointed.

What had seemed like a big kitchen actually lacked counter space. The vast majority of counter surface either had big overhangs of cupboards over it or was in a place that made it awkward to use (like right next to the sink where dirty dishes end up getting piled while the cooking is going on).

Also, the cooktop was abysmal. It took FOREVER to heat up and even longer to cool down. The first meal I cooked in our new home involved white rice and I tell you, this food blogger was nearly in tears over that little pot. It WOULD NOT come to a simmer. And then, once it did it instantly galloped to a boil that would not calm down no matter how low I turned the dial. It took me five minutes of blowing on the bubbling water before realizing that I could just put it onto a different burner. Which was cold and did not maintain the simmer but eventually warmed up enough to sloooooowly cook the rice.

But there were aspects of our new kitchen that we loved.

The cupboards were as richly brown and shiny as maple syrup. And they were deep with lots of shelves. The best part about our new kitchen was that while washing dishes I had the most serene view of the lake behind our house (it was this lake with its little rookery that we fell in love with before even setting eyes on the house). Between me and that view was our big unfinished wooden table where I liked to imagine school-aged kids one day doing homework while snacking on cookies and milk.

The view from our kitchen sink. Sub Zero Wolf Delicious Designs Kitchen Design Contest is going on. Vote and then comment below for you chance to win a $100 Visa Gift Card

This is the view we see when washing dishes. It is so peaceful that I barely notice the laundry piled on the table, and almost even that I’m doing dishes at all!

We immediately knew that something had to be done about the counters and the cooktop.

But nobody was allowed to mess with those cupboards or with that view!

We hired a contractor to come in and organize the job and to give us suggestions. If we wanted to keep the dishwashing-view and the cupboards there wasn’t much we could do in terms of rearrangement. To gain usable counter space we considered getting rid of the top level of counter and making the lower level go the entire depth. But we so loved sitting at our “bar” on Friday evenings drinking wine and chatting about the week that it was a no go.

And then our contractor had a brilliant idea.

He proposed that we gain counter space by making the lower level of countertop deeper. That is, we could deepen the first level and have the second level start further back. The only extra concern was the amount of space available to get between the counter and the cupboards that run along the side of our kitchen. Our contractor had a solution for that as well: Trim the corners off of the top level to allow for those few extra inches of space that we needed.

The deepened lower level of our granite countertops. Sub Zero Wolf Delicious Designs Kitchen Design Contest is going on. Vote and then comment below for you chance to win a $100 Visa Gift Card

See how nice and deep that low level is? And see how the top level has its corner trimmed off to make more room for walking past? We never would have thought of this solution ourselves.

Wanting to bring as much of the outdoors in as we could, we decided to go with a granite countertop, a deep brown striked with corals and creams to set off the cupboards and the table.

Next we needed to choose a cooktop. When we walked into the appliance shop we already knew that we wanted a gas cooktop. We wanted to instantaneously turn heat on and off and we wanted precise control over temperature. We were so vehement with the salesperson, and so specific about what we wanted, that he immediately said, “Do I ever have the cooktop for you!” And he led us to the cooktop of our dreams.

Wolf 30" Gas Cooktop. Sub Zero Wolf Delicious Designs Kitchen Design Contest is going on. Vote and then comment below for you chance to win a $100 Visa Gift Card

Another view of our counters with the trimmed corner and, in the background, our fabulously brilliant Wolf 30″ Gas Cooktop.

It was the Wolf 30″ Gas Cooktop. We instantly fell in love with this cooktop and so it was no surprise for us to learn that Wolf appliances were born in the commercial kitchen. Really, cooking on it has reminded me of cooking in my parents’ restaurants.

This Wolf Cooktop has been perfect for us with controls on the top (so little fingers can’t accidentally turn on the gas!) and, best of all, something called True Simmer. Basically, each of the four burners has two rings from which the gas can come out. The top one is used for the regular cooking settings (ranging from low to high like any cooktop). But then the ring that is lower is for simmering. It’s far enough from your pot that it keeps things at a…well…at a True Simmer. And you have a ton of control over this too, with settings from a low simmer all the way up to a high simmer.

Let me tell you, cooking rice has never been a problem on this baby!

All the kitchen remodeling wrapped up several months ago. We now have the extra counter space that we needed, our cooktop works properly (and is completely brilliant) and we still have that happy family lake-backed view to enjoy while washing dishes.

It really is a delicious design!

  1. Useful facts. Happy us I stumbled upon your internet site unintentionally, using this program . astonished why that automobile accident couldn’t happened in advance! My partner and i saved this.

  2. Ashley H says:

the one I voted for was warm and not as modern looking as many of the others. I voted for the design I did because the colors and style fit my dream home perfectly! I will have that one day!

  3. Thomas Murphy says:

I voted for the 1st one, I love the white and black.
    rounder9834 @yahoo.com

  4. Sarah L says:

I voted for ones that looked like people could really live there.
    Thanks for the contest.

  5. Loi says:

The kitchen I voted for had White cabinets, a square island with a stove top on it (instead of a sink) and Black countertops. It also had a booth style breakfast nook and a buffet/service area for the dining room (I presume). I like that the stove top is on the island because I find myself there for longer periods of time than the sink (when I’m cooking anyway). LOVE the little service area pass through with the fabulous marble counter! I think it allows some openness without the whole view of my sometimes messy kitchen (still working on the “cleaning as I go” model). I also like that if I am lonely in my house for some reason, I can watch the tv above the breakfast nook ; )

  6. susan smoaks says:

I voted for the kitchen with the huge window in it because I love all the natural light!

  7. Jenee says:

I voted for 5 of them. My top pick is the one with warm wood and floor color, the island is turned sideways in the photo and you can see into it. THAT’s the kind of kitchen I would want in my home! One of the kitchens I voted for is more modern, which isn’t my style but still deserves credit, it was great design, I think.

  8. Tanya B says:

I voted for the white kitchen with the butcher block island because it reminds me of a homey place

  9. almanyc says:

i voted for the one that had an island with three chairs since its functional

    • Christine Pittman says:

I like the functionality of that kitchen as well. You know everything’s just gonna work out, somehow. THanks for entering and good luck!

  10. angie lilly says:

I voted for 5 different kitchens and loved them all for their modern sleekness and urban farm style. I especially loved the kitchen that had the solid wooden beam that went thru the middle of the kitchen and had these awesome vintage looking pendant lights hanging from the beam. That is my dream kitchen!

    • Christine Pittman says:

Angie, I love that kitchen with the beam as well. So awesome. But I, like you, find it hard to choose just one style. I want a modern kitchen but at the same time that feels cold and I find myself wanting something more traditional and homier. So hard to choose! Thanks for entering the giveaway and good luck!

  11. mary gardner says:

I voted for #30 because I really like the industrial look of the kitchen

    • Christine Pittman says:

      Mary,
Isn’t that industrial feel so cool? I love it too. Not sure it would work in my house but I sometimes wish that it could. THanks for entering the giveaway on my blog. Good luck!

  12. James Beck says:

    sleek and modern

    • Christine Pittman says:

James, I hear you! Sleek and modern always looks so clean and crisp. Great choice! Thanks for entering the giveaway. Good luck!

  13. Samii Meyer says:

I love the counters here – they are so gorgeous. I think this would be very close to my perfet kitchen

  14. rachel travis says:

    I loved #23!!

    rachelmarietravis at gmail dot com

  15. TIA BEVERLY says:

    very sleek and modern

    • Christine Pittman says:

Tia, I adore sleek and modern kitchens too. I go back and forth between wanting that and wanting something more traditional though. So hard to choose! Thanks for entering the giveaway and good luck!

  16. Nancy says:

I voted for one in the last row. It was functional, simple and fits my style and would fit with the rest of my house.

    • Christine Pittman says:

Nancy, I really like that functional style too. Great choice. Thanks for entering the giveaway and good luck!

  17. phyllis says:

I wish I was a U.S. resident so I could enter the contest.

    • Christine Pittman says:

I remember what that was like, mom. Hang on because there’s more disappointment. I think my next giveaway, a big one, is going to be US residents only too. I think the sponsors don’t want to have to ship further but also, I think their marketing divisions are separate for Canada. That means that they don’t want to spend any of their marketing budget on something that is outside of their region. Also, in the case of the upcoming one, there are some food prizes that would not be allowed to be shipped. Sorry about that. I do feel your pain. It bothers me to have to do it.

  18. Gianna says:

    The wolf oven is AMAZING.

    • Christine Pittman says:

      Gianna,
Isn’t it, though? I really love it too. Thanks for entering the giveaway and good luck!

  19. marie says:

fb won’t let me vote- its just glitching, but i like 2nd on right on the bottom!

i chose #17, its rustic and homey

    • Christine Pittman says:

Oh, I love that rustic and homey feeling too. In fact, nothing makes me feel more comfortable in a kitchen than that. Great choice. Thanks for entering the giveaway and good luck!

  21. Ellie W says:

I love #17 with all the rustic looking wood. Love the island with the stained glass cabinet doors.

    • Christine Pittman says:

      Ellie,
Isn’t that island incredible? I am totally in love with it too. Great choice! Thanks for entering the giveaway. Good luck!

  22. Bridget V says:

This was my favorite https://pc.subzero-wolf.com/contest/thumbs/lieberknecht_f-md-021_image_01.jpg Loved the design and the combination of dark wood and white on the cabinetry.

    • Christine Pittman says:

Bridget, I really love that cabinetry too. So clean and homey at the same time. Love your choice. Good luck in the giveaway!

  23. carmen says:

the fave aspect of the kitchen i voted for was the dark-wood pantry that took up an entire wall. i’m a sucker for dark wood and tons of storage :)

    • Christine Pittman says:

Me too, Carmen! It seems that every time we move to a new house it has more storage space and yet I instantly fill it up. I doubt I would fill that pantry up as quickly! Thanks for entering and good luck!

  27. Erica Best says:

i love the one with the white chairs

    • Christine Pittman says:

Erica, Those chairs totally add to the kitchen’s clean look, don’t they? Great choice! Thanks for entering the giveaway. Good luck!

  28. Daniel M says:

the white one for it’s clean design

    • Christine Pittman says:

Daniel, I really love that white clean look for a kitchen too. Very fresh! Thanks for entering the giveaway. Good luck!

  29. Betty C says:

I was prompted to choose my 5 favorite designs. I love the look of oak and maple so all of my choices had that look. White seems too sterile for my tastes.

    • Christine Pittman says:

Betty, While I do love a fresh white kitchen, I know what you mean about how it can sometimes look sterile. I grew up in a home with dark oak in the kitchen. That is to this day what makes me feel most happy when cooking or spending time with my family in the kitchen. Thanks for entering the giveaway and good luck!

  30. david cosgrove says:

    curved island!

  31. ky2here says:

It was difficult to narrow it down to 5. My selections were impractical (all stainless steal – no kids or pets in that house) but gorgeous.

    • Christine Pittman says:

I know what you mean! Those white and/or stainless kitchens look so clean and fresh. But then I imagine them in my house with all the colorful toys underfoot and I know the look would not be sustained for long. But nice to dream about a kitchen like that! Great choices. Thanks for entering the giveaway and good luck!

  32. Duane Cooper says:

voted for the one with oak cabinets, just like my grandma’s kitchen, dlcooper1101@gmail.com

    • Christine Pittman says:

Duane, I grew up in a house with oak cabinets. Still the warmest coziest look for a kitchen in my opinion. Great choice! Thanks for entering the giveaway. Good luck!

  33. Tabathia B says:

I voted for the kitchen with the island with brown wooden drawers, sink and three seats because it’s functionality for cooking with guest or kids and easy access to clean up with the sink and plenty of storage

    tbarrettno1 at gmail dot com

    • Christine Pittman says:

Tabathia, I like all the storage available in that kitchen too. I never seem to have enough drawers! Great choice. Thanks for entering the giveaway and good luck!

  34. Erin from Long Island says:

I voted for the one I did because I loved it’s modern look yet homey feel.

Georgia, I know! Aren’t they all gorgeous kitchens? SO hard to choose. Thanks for entering the giveaway. Good luck!

  40. Kerry says:

My favorite one was the one in the middle of the 11th row. I love the white cupboards and the contrasting color of the bar chairs.

    • Christine Pittman says:

Kerry, Isn’t that kitchen fantastic> I love the bar chairs too. Thanks for entering the giveaway and good luck!

My kitchen is a lot homier and nowhere near as clean and chic as this. Somehow though, even though I know it’s not me, I always love this kind of design too. Great choice! And good luck in the giveaway.

  65. Madeline says:

I didn’t see which number I voted for but it had a curved doorway in the background and a vented hood with a pretty flower design in the back. I like it best because it isn’t so modern like a lot of the other ones.

    • Christine Pittman says:

I do love a modern kitchen. But I also worry that it will look dated quickly. If you choose something classic it’s more likely that it will look great years from now. Great choice! Good luck in the giveaway!

    • Christine Pittman says:

I have two ovens in my kitchen. I’m positive that that was a reason we bought the house. lol. It really makes a difference especially when cooking for crowds around the holidays. Love your choice! Good luck in the giveaway!

  66. Anastasia says:

One of the kitchens I picked had a large, curved counter space! I loved the look of it and all the room to work :) My current kitchen is a tiny box with ZERO counter space, so all that room and style was dreamy :)

    • Christine Pittman says:

It’s so hard to work in a kitchen that doesn’t have counter space. I feel your pain. We added some counter space to ours but there still isn’t that much useable space, or at least not as much as I’d like! I love the kitchen you chose. Good luck in the giveaway!

  67. kim h says:

I voted for one with dark marble counter tops because I thought it gave the kitchen a very elegant look

I don’t know the name of the design I voted for, but it was lovely with the hard wood floors, matching hard wood cabinets,

I think I know which one you mean. It is so homey and comfortable, I agree. I would love spending hours in there every day. Thanks for entering this giveaway and good luck!

my five picks included the most stainless steel appliances and space around the kitchen where you and your partner could cook without dancing around the kitchen

    • Christine Pittman says:

I love stainless steel too. AND space to work in the kitchen. It make such a different to my enjoyiment levels if I have room to move. Thanks for voting and good luck in the giveaway.

  72. tamar says:

I voted for my top 5. I liked ones that had more modern appearances (the one with the see thru fridge door was pretty innovative) and also welcomed lots of light.

    • Christine Pittman says:

I also love the see-through fridge door. I have to admit though that I don’t think I’d want it in my kitchen because my fridge always looks like a such a diasaster, epsecially during the holidays when it’s constantly filled with leftovers and all kinds of treats. Eek! Thanks for voting and good luck in the giveaway.

  73. Margot C says:

First off, your range is so beautiful. I would love to re-do my kitchen wit just that style.

On the site I voted for 5 kitchens; one with a French looking plaster hood over the range, one with a library ladder, one with a giant butcher’s block center island, one with smart looking black hardware and one with cool looking soda fountain stools. I did this really because all of those things in one form or another are things that I would like to do in my own kitchen.

    • Christine Pittman says:

Oh wow! All those things combined into one kitchen would be amazing. I also love them all. Thank you for the compliment on my kitchen. I do love it so much. And thanks for voting. Good luck in the giveaway!

  74. Cynthia C says:

The kitchen I liked best (hard choice) was the one with the steel chairs and gray tile. It was the one I’d most like to cook in.

    • Christine Pittman says:

That cool look with the steel chairs caught my eye too. Love your choice! Thanks for voting and good luck in the giveaway.

  75. Madonna says:

My kitchen has no counter space and it drives me insane. When we start remodeling (fingers crossed very soon) that is one of my major fixes. I only picked 3 to vote on. Honestly most of them seemed cold to me but there were 3 that seemed like a real family kitchen. I was raised that the kitchen was the center of the home and most of those seemed more like showplaces than homes.

    • Christine Pittman says:

Madonna, I know exactly what you mean! The kitchen is the center of the home to me as well so if me and the kids can’t get cozy and read a book at the table or spend time snacking, if my friends and I can’t feel comfortable having a glass of wine together there, then that is not a kitchen I want to be in. It’s not just for cooking but for living. I love how you made your choices. Thanks for voting and good luck in the giveaway.

  76. rachel says:

I voted for five clean and simple designs — no clutter for me!

    • Christine Pittman says:

Rachel, I like the clean-looking kitchens too. If only I could keep mine looking that way! The clutter just seems to migrate to my counters of its own volition. Thanks for voting and good luck in the giveaway.

  77. Paula says:

Not entering the contest. Just want to say how lovely your kitchen looks and you were so right not to mess with that gorgeous view.

  78. Neiddy says:

I voted for the kitchen with the glass door fridge, I have been wanting a fridge like this for quite a while so it immediately grabbed my attention

    • Christine Pittman says:

Neiddy, I love that fridge too. But the inside of my fridge always seems so disorganized. I wonder if it would look less nice when FULL FULL FULL. Are you one of those people who can keep their fridge organized? If so, I am envious of you and your ability to have a fridge like this. Thanks for voting and good luck in the giveaway.

  79. Elena says:

I voted for the white kitchen because it looks elegant and I like the color.

    • Christine Pittman says:

Elena, I love a white kitchen too. Always seems so clean and fresh, which is exactly how our food prep should be, don’t you think? Thanks for voting and good luck in the giveaway.

I voted for a kitchen with a curved island because I think it looks unusual but is very functional.

    • Christine Pittman says:

I really love that island too. That bit of interest while still being useful totally makes that kitchen shine. Great choice! Thanks for voting and good luck in the giveaway.

  82. Kelly D says:

I voted for kitchen #27 because I loved the curved design of the counters and the marble finish.

    • Christine Pittman says:

Kelly, I adore those curvy counters. So interesting. Great choice! Thanks for voting and good luck in the giveaway.
