The Oscars are tonight!!!
Do you have plans?
Are you having a fabulous Oscar Party or staying home on your own to concentrate and soak up as much as possible? Either way, get into the spirit with the Best Picture Nominee Drinks that are going on here. There’s one for each film that was nominated for best picture.
I’ve been bringing you a different Oscar-inspired drink everyday for 9 days as we’ve counted down to the Oscars. It’s been so fun.
In developing the drinks and taking the pictures my goal was to capture the spirit of the movies such that if someone just saw the photo or tasted the drink they would know which movie it went with.
I think I just invented an Oscar Party Game! You can play “Guess which movie goes with this drink?” How fun!
Today I’m bringing you my final Best Picture Nominee drink. It’s in honor of Argo. Argo is an edge-of-your-seat kind of movie. Even though we all know how it ends (it’s a true story so the truth is out there) you still have to lean forward with anxiety until the last moment.
I really liked it.
To celebrate this movie I’m proposing a Champagne Cocktail (a less expensive sparkling wine is perfect for this too). It’s appropriate especially for the end of the movie where Champagne corks pop and wine bubbles and fizzes.
It’s also appropriate because to tonight being Oscars night. Let’s celebrate!
In addition to the sparkling wine, this cocktail has Scotch because the handsome (if shaggy) Ben Affleck swipes a bottle of Macallan from the Canadian Ambassador’s residence and spends a night drinking it out of the bottle.
I don’t recommend doing that.
But mixing it with a bit of bubbly is perfectly o.k..
Especially if it’s also got some maple syrup mixed in, to celebrate the role of Canada in the crazy evacuation scheme. And lime, because lime is favored in Iranian cooking. In fact, the big round thick-skinned limes you get at the grocery store are Persian Limes (Iran used to be called Persia).
So, this Champagne Cocktail is the perfect mix of celebration and ode to the movie Argo.

On with today’s Best Picture Nominee drink!
- 1 ounce Scotch whisky
- 1 ounce real maple syrup
- ½ ounce lime juice
- ice
- 3 ounces sparkling wine (an inexpensive Prosecco works well here)
- Measure the Scotch, maple syrup and lime juice into a cocktail shaker. Add a good handful of ice, put the lid on the shaker and shake it up until everything is really really cold.
- Strain the Scotch mixture into a champagne flute. Top with the sparkling wine. Celebrate!

Geeze…. I wish I would have thought to make cocktails! I think I was drinking licorice tea.

I wound up being sick with a terrible sore throat (still have it!) and so drank tea all night as well. I have to come up with a different excuse to sip on these cocktails all night soon. Hey, we should have a virtual cocktail party one of these days. THAT would be an excuse!
OMG! Love that you chose a champagne cocktail and that you added Maple Syrup for the Cdn. content in the movie! Hope you curl up and relax with one of your wonderful cocktails this evening and enjoy the Oscars.
I’ll be watching (and sipping on an Amaretto over ice probably :)
Thanks Paula. Hope you had a nice evening and enjoyed your Amaretto! Sounds like a perfect Oscars drink to me :)
