Beer For Best Picture Nominee Silver Linings
I’m doing a liquid countdown to the Oscars. Just two days left after today. That means I’ve got a drink for you today (it’s a super-simple one to make your Oscar Party so easy!) and two more to come. Check out all my Oscar Party drink ideas here.
I finally saw Silver Linings Playbook and I have to say that I’m surprised it’s nominated for Best Picture. Don’t get me wrong: I liked it. A lot.
But it’s nothing like the other nominees.
It’s smaller.
It’s a movie about two mentally disturbed people who fall in love via dance and football.
And as a romantic comedy (which is, I guess, what it really is) it’s not even splashy with all the romantic music swells and hit and miss moments where the main couple nearly get together but don’t.
I mean, crazy people falling in love aside, it’s definitely not When Harry Met Sally.
Even though I liked it and even though I like the Oscars nod to the genre and the ability to see past all the glitz and glam of other films for the little gem that’s here, I don’t think it really has a chance to win.
But then, it could be a year like 1999 when everyone I knew was surprised and outraged by the winner. You never know.
In terms of drinks, for this movie the answer was obvious. It has to be beer. They drink wine a couple of times but we’ve already done wine for Les Misérables. And really, beer goes much better with the spirit of the movie: Sitting in a shabby-cozy living room in Philly eating “crabby snacks and homemades”, watching the game and drinking…
beer.
Looks good to me!
And I just want to quickly say that the beer suggestion, and the Les Mis wine suggestion for that matter, are not cop outs. Not at all. These are the drinks that best match the movies. And I actually had you in mind when coming up with these drinks. I was thinking of you over there hosting your Oscars Party.
(By the way, I just looked it up and it seems that half of people call it “Oscar Party” and half call it “Oscars Party”. Now I have no idea which to use! How about if I alternate?).
Yes, I thought of you sitting there planning for your Oscar Party, coming up with all kinds of Oscars Party Ideas, getting your Oscar Party food ready and your Oscars Party outfit on. Or maybe just planning to have a quiet evening at home giving yourself a pedicure while watching the red carpet blitz and wondering about all the Oscar Parties the stars will be attending after the show.
Whatever you’re doing for your own little Oscars Party, I thought I would find a way to make things simple for you. You can definitely go ahead and make all the Best Picture Nominee drinks that I’ve proposed. Or you can pick a couple of your favorites. Or you can just go with beer and wine and nonchalantly tell your guests, “The beer is in honor of Silver Linings Playbook and the wine is for Les Misérables.” (Hint: Putting a football near the beer and a French flag near the wine might make your effort at putting together an Oscar Party Theme more convincing!)
I did consider helping your Oscars Party Theme out a bit more by providing a recipe for Crabby Snacks. But alas, I just looked them up here and there is NO WAY I’m going to make them. Would you?

There’s nothing wrong with an ice cold beer once in awhile and especially if it’s the drink that matches the movie :)

You know there’s beer and then there’s beer. A good beer can go a long way. Waiting for the last two drinks before making my decision. :)

I know what you mean. I’m not a huge beer drinker but I can totally go for a really good porter anytime. The last two drinks are kind of amazing. I’ve saved teh best for last! I think it will make your decision harder! lol
