I haven’t seen The Life of Pi. I’m not sure if I will. You see, it’s based on a book that I read and didn’t like much. However, not liking it has not made it disappear from my head. Quite the contrary!

Images from The Life of Pi pop into my head all the time.

It’s one of those books that wedged itself in there for whatever reason and doesn’t want to come out. I keep meaning to re-read the book to find out why it has haunted me. But I haven’t gotten around to it yet. I worry that the movie won’t contain whatever it is that my subconscious has latched onto and will instead obliterate the haunt. That could be a good thing except it would mean that I don’t get to figure out what it was about the book that brought my thoughts to it again and again for years

And so I won’t be watching Life of Pi. Instead, I will sip on this drink and consider re-reading the novel, assuming I can find it under one of my massive piles of cookbooks. It’s gotta be here somewhere!

This Salty Tiger is a refreshing cocktail – perfect for a novel/film where the main character is on a raft in the middle of the ocean suffering of severe thirst.

I bet Pi would have loved to find one of these to gulp back1

It’s based on the drink A Salty Dog, which is made of vodka and grapefruit juice in a salt-rimmed glass. This uversion ses India Pale Ale instead of vodka. You might be wondering, could this possibly be good?

Beer and grapefruit juice in a salted glass?

You know what? It’s brilliant.

It’s such a refreshing cocktail that I found myself sipping on it from a sports bottle on a Saturday afternoon walk.

How did that happen?

A refreshing cocktail of grapefruit juice and IPA in honor of The Oscars Best Picture Nominee The Life of Pi, recipe by www.cookthestory.comI’d loaded up my backpack with a tall glass wrapped in a pillow case, a lidded container of salt and my camera so that I could walk over to a nearby beach to take pictures of the drink. I carried the beer and grapefruit juice mixture in a sports bottle (the kind with a retractable straw that I usually fill with water when I go running). I got to the beach, rimmed the glass in salt, poured in the contents of my sports bottle and took my shots. Then I poured the beverage back into the sports bottle, packed everything up and began wandering home. On the way, I wet my parched lips with the Salty Tiger and re-discovered how deliciously refreshing it is.

Just the thing on a warm Florida afternoon.

And so I continued to sip on the refreshing cocktail and to walk until I’d gotten home and had run out of drink.

Then I took an afternoon beer-induced nap.

It was a good day.

This is a quick and refreshing cocktail to serve on a hot day. The ratio is one part beer to one part grapefruit and so I haven't specified amounts. Just fill a glass half full with beer and then fill the remaining half with the juice. Voila! But don't forget to salt the rim of the glass first. A necessarily delicious step.

Recipe type: Beverage
Serves: 1
Ingredients
  • grapefruit juice
  • kosher salt
  • India Pale Ale (a lager will work here too)
Instructions
  1. Pour a tablespoon or so of grapefruit juice into a soup bowl. Put a tablespoon or so of the salt in a separate bowl. Dip the rim of a tall glass in the grapefruit juice. Then dip it in the salt, twisting it around so that the salt coats the entire rim.
  2. Set the glass down salt-side-up and fill it half full with the India Pale Ale. Top up the glass with grapefruit juice. Drink and be refreshed.

I really did not like Life of Pi (the book) either. I can’t remember why now, but I feel like EVERYONE loved it and I was all, “What book did you read?” The drink sounds good though!

I know! I read it in a book club and everyone else loved it. And I thought it had been well-written, blah blah blah. But I just wasn’t into it and found it hard to care enough to finish reading it in time. But, as I said, it does pop into my head all the time. The raft with the animals and the guy floating there. Not sure why. Weird, right?
