Winter Park Harvest Festival 2012 Chat
When we found out that we were moving to Orlando a little part of my stomach died. I assumed that transitioning from Toronto’s multicultural urban food mecca to the land of Mickey Donald’s would be like switching from a crisp Pinot Grigio to a Wildberry cooler. And at first it kind of was.
What I didn’t know was that Orlando has this crazy hidden food scene. You just need to know where to look (or rather, who to follow on Twitter! @Droolius and @EatLocalOrlando are a great places to start). Seriously, Orlando is not a food wasteland at all.
Did you know that on Father’s Day this year there was a Bacon Off between two food trucks?
“Bacon Off?” Yes, Big Wheel Truck and C&S Brisket Bus had a contest to see who made the best homemade bacon, novelty bacon (like bacon-style chicken wings) and other delectable treats. If you missed it, check out my and Katie’s chat with Droolius about bacon and about the Bacon Off here.
There’s that kind of thing going on all the time. For instance, this spring we’ll see the opening of the East End Market which will be a venue for local food entrepreneurs, tradespeople, chefs and creatives. And this month we have the Winter Park Harvest Festival where you can buy locally produced fruits and vegetables and other items to turn your own Thanksgiving dinner into your very own locally-produced event.
To get into the spirit of Orlando food, the upcoming Winter Park Harvest Festival and to hear more about the upcoming East End Market, Katie and I spoke with Heather Grove (Winter Park Harvest Festival Community Relations) about what we can expect at the festival and how it is introducing the future vendors of the East End Market. Watch this chat to find out what types of produce and other products will be sold at the festival as well as what kinds of cooking demonstrations and kid-friendly activities will be going down.
I never would have expected it 3 years ago when we moved here but November 17th is going to be a *great* food-filled day here in Orlando!
Are you going to the Winter Park Harvest Festival? If so, let me know so I can be on the lookout for you!
