Burgers, Tedeschi Trucks & Memories
Songs To Cook To, Episode 1
Even though September is only a few days away, I’m not yet ready to let go of summer. I want to sniff chlorine, sunscreen and sweat on my kids cheeks, get cool beer-flavored kisses from my husband and wipe burger juice from my chin in the late-night sunshine.
I know there won’t ever be another summer like this one, when J’s just mastered swimming in the pool and M’s just mastered putting every twig and blade of grass into her mouth. There won’t ever again be a First Summer at Our New House on the Lake, nor will I see the delight on my family’s faces at experiencing the Winnipeg Folk Festival for the first time. I feel more than a bit sad about having to move on.
This past weekend we had a perfect summer evening that seemed to capture the whole season. I don’t ever want to forget it. All four of us had fun being together outside, the kids wading in the kiddie pool, the grown ups laughing and chatting in lawn chairs.
The evening seemed to stretch on forever and I wanted to remember every single second. I think I have a chance at hanging onto the memories too. The reason is that all of my senses were drenched in stimulation. The smell of chlorine, sunscreen, beer, sweat and burgers was paired with shrieking kids backed up by the driving beat and smoky melodies of the Tedeschi Trucks Band (specifically their 2011 debut album Revelator for which they won the Best Blues Album Grammy Award).
Years from now when I smell summer smells, taste bun and beef or hear Susan Tedeschi singing about the Simple Things I know it will take me back to these lazy months of chlorine, sunscreen, burgers and beer.
Did your summer have an anthem? Has it already solidified a memory for you? Leave a comment so I can hear all about it.

Disclosure: I’m an Amazon Associate meaning that if you buy the Tedeschi Trucks Band album Revelator
by clicking on a link from my site I’ll get a very small kick back from Amazon. But know that I am only telling you about this band because I honestly think they’re great, not because Amazon pays for our ketchup.

I’m so glad you’ve had the opportunity to really embrace summer! It has been a blur for me and to be honest I don’t like that. I love being able to have lazy summer days. No music comes to mind for this season, but once it hits me I’ll let you know!
