A New Year, A New Challenge: The Monthly Meal Plan
I don’t have much time to explain. Actually, that’s kind of the point: I don’t have much time for anything these days.
Ah, the fond memories of the hubs and I sitting over bacon and eggs, a pile of cookbooks and a grocery list at The Only Café making our weekly meal plan and grocery list. We’d challenge each other to cook and taste new things while also making sure our week was well-rounded and had enough grains and fish, not too much meat and fat, yada yada yada.
Ha! These days I usually find myself at the grocery store without a list trying desperately to plan meals based on fuzzy memories of what’s in the fridge (memories = fuzzy, hopefully items in fridge ≠ fuzzy).
Some people can probably take this in stride. But it makes me nuts! I pull into that parking lot nearly every day, there to pick up yet another item that I’ve somehow forgotten. And grocery store visits, which were once calming enjoyable experiences, are now mad dashes through the aisles with a cranky toddler filling half my cart (and trying to eat half its contents) and a babe strapped to my chest.
Never mind that I always walk out with at least twice as many things as I went in for. This of course makes no sense since all these daily over-buying expeditions should result in an abundance of foods in the fridge. And yet…there I am again the next day.
Anyhow, a couple of weeks ago an FB friend posted about her monthly meal plan. “Huh? Monthly meal plan? Really?” I inquired and she promptly emailed me a copy of a cute little excel spreadsheet that totally appealed to my OCD-ish tendencies. And so I HAD to make one of my own. I think it may just solve all my problems. Or not. Don’t know yet. Minimally, it will be something to blog about.
My plan is quite a bit different from my FB pal’s, mostly because I’m trying to experiment with recipes from cookbooks and from other bloggers while also testing recipes of my own. But the idea is the same. And so, Carly, I’m thanking you now for a brilliant idea. Let’s hope I’m not cursing you in 31 days time!
*sigh* I’ve run out of time. The hubs is back from taking baby M for a walk, J is waking from his nap and I need to get going on our fabulous New Year’s Eve Extravaganza*. I’ll post my January Meal Plan as soon as I figure out how to link to an excel spreadsheet. And then I’ll update y’all on how it’s going. Till then, do tell me about your plans to make 2012 smooth and easy.
Happy New Year!!!
*Wanna know what we’re up to tonight? It’s wieners and s’mores at the firepit with J followed by fireworks on the lake. And then, after the little ones are in bed, we’ll be having a bit of a pork belly feast for two: Homemade Pork, Apple and Almond Paté on Garlic Toast followed by Crisp and Unctuous Pork Belly, Caraway Buttered Egg Noodles and Roasted Green Beans, and then back to the firepit for Dark Chocolate S’mores and a bottle of Red Zin. I CAN’T WAIT!.
